If
the word 'crazy' means 'with no pattern or logic', then that's the best
word to define the weather in Melbourne. Located in southeast Australia
and far from the Equator, the four seasons are well-defined here. However, the weather varies a lot. When I was packing, Juan told me it was very hot here, so I basically brought summer clothes except for a light pullover for cooler summer nights. In the plane, it said the temperature here was 59°F. I thought it was wrong, but when I arrived I heard it was a cold front. I decided to buy a jacket and scarves. Our trip to Ocean Road wasn't better because it was too cold for me and I wasn't ready for that. It was 55° and very windy.
But in the first ten days of my stay, the temperature was in the 50s 60s. Early in the morning it was usually around 50°. I decided to buy a heavier jacket because I was starting to suffer with the cold and I couldn't imagine wearing my summer clothes.
The day after, the temperature started to go up (Murphy's Law). Not counting that the variation in the temperature within the same day here is absurd. For example, yesterday it was 18°C (64°F) early in the morning and it reached 43°C (109°F) later in the afternoon/evening - the sun sets at 8:30. According to Juan, that temperature is equivalent to being inside an oven with a hair drier blowing hot wind right on your face - it's windy here because of the proximity with the ocean. I hadn't been this hot since my childhood in the summer in Rio. It's really unpleasant. Some companies closed earlier and there were train delays because of the excessive heat. We decided to go to the beach to enjoy the sunny day but we almost regretted it when we were on the way there because it was too hot. The beach was crowded and although the water was ice cold there were a lot of people swimming in the ocean.
But it was worth it in the end. The sunset was beautiful.
