Minhas estórias

Oi, gente,

Neste blog irei postar textos, fotos, vídeos, etc.

Sydney

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. Sydney is beautiful. Everywhere is beautiful. Just walking down Darling Harbour, the view of the bay area, the Opera House, the buildings, everywhere you look you find aesthetics in its fullest form. We were there for two days only. On the first day, we went to the main tourist spots in the city. On the next day we took a walk down the coast from Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach. Marvelous coast. No worries!

Opera House and Harbour Bridge

There are seagulls everywhere. I love them.

Laid-back, no-worries, Aussie style - easy to get used to it!

An aborigine performing in the street by the harbour. A guy was playing the didgeridoo, their most typical instrument, and the guy was dancing and taking pictures with the tourists.

This is the entrance to The Rocks Museum. It tells the story of Sydney since the aboriginal people were the sole inhabitants, before the European settlement. Very interesting. The buildings from over 100 years ago have been preserved in this area after a lot of protests, because the government planned to knock the whole area down (called The Rocks) to make new buildings.

Second day - The walk along the beach took us about 3 hours. It was such a scenic thing to do!

On the way, Waverley Cemetery, the most scenic burial ground in the world. Right across from the ocean.

To protect swimmers form sharks and from the rocks, they build these pools by the shore. The sea water itself fills the pool in the high tide.

I liked this one the best. Tamarama Beach.

The souvenir I got back - an Aussie suntan! Face, chest, arms and back! I hadn't gotten a suntan  for ages! It wasn't sunny at all - it was cloudy actually - but the sun here really burns you without your noticing it.
The sun marks from my top! Bicolor Deb!

Williamstown, onde tudo começou - where it all began

Williamstown is where Melbourne started in 1837. Today it is a very elegant and charming area of the city, where they have managed to maintain the historical architecture, and still blend it with Melbourne's typical modernity. Even though there is a busy commercial area, with a number of shops and restaurants, the region is basically residential, with grand old houses side by side with contemporary facades.

Juan particularly liked this house. I think because of the bold design. Not because of the Porsche parked in the driveway, of course!

The region is by the bayside and it has a beautiful fauna, with dozens of seagulls that sit along the way among the pedestrians, as well as others, such as pelicans and other birds I'm not familiar with.

From there you can see a terrific view of Melbourne's skyline.

In order to get to Williamstown, we took the train at the oldest train station in the region.

Cantando e andando - Walking and singing

Juan had warned me - your trip to Melbourne will be filled with samba and pagode (the type of music Juan sings and plays - a variation of samba). I thought I'd get away with it, but NOT! Several times when Juan is with his friends, they bring their instruments and start playing and singing. In our trip to Great Ocean Road and the Grampians we listened to pagode and samba almost all the time (99% of the time). Even when we're walking somewhere, Juan and his friend Gustavo, who plays the banjo, sing and play while they're on the way, at the tram stop, and even on trams and trains. I'm almost starting to like pagode and samba*!!

*NOT! To my last statement. My thing is music in English.

This is a perfect country for left-handers! As you probably know, here in Australia you drive on the left side of the road, like in England or other countries of anglo-saxon colonization, like Jamaica, for example - but not the US. The driver sits on the right seat and drives on the left side of the road.

That wasn't new for me. What surprised me was that this principle - staying on the left side - is adopted in several other situations. On sidewalks, people stride along the left side. That is bad when you want to look at the windows because you will literally get in people's way.

O Juan me avisou mas demorou para eu me acostumar!

Even on stairs or escalators, people stand on the left side and leave the right side for people who want to pass them and go faster. Juan told me about it but it took me a while to get used to it!

But the hardest part is when I have to cross a two-way road. We in Brazil look at the left side first but here it is the opposite! So, I never know where to look!

A curious thing about pedestrian traffic here. If you don't cross the street at the pedestrian crossing, you have to pay a fine if you're caught. That's normal. That's the way it is in the US, Canada and in many other countires. But even if there are no cars coming, you have to wait for the light to turn green, any time of the day or night. I've seen very few people break this law. Most people obey the rule. It's funny because this would never work in Brazil. People cross streets wherever they want, any time they want.

O clima de Melbourne do casaco ao biquini - The weather in Melbourne from jackets to bikinis

If the word 'crazy' means 'with no pattern or logic', then that's the best word to define the weather in Melbourne. Located in southeast Australia and far from the Equator, the four seasons are well-defined here. However, the weather varies a lot. When I was packing, Juan told me it was very hot here, so I basically brought summer clothes except for a light pullover for cooler summer nights. In the plane, it said the temperature here was 59°F. I thought it was wrong, but when I arrived I heard it was a cold front. I decided to buy a jacket and scarves. Our trip to Ocean Road wasn't better because it was too cold for me and I wasn't ready for that. It was 55° and very windy.

But in the first ten days of my stay, the temperature was in the 50s 60s. Early in the morning it was usually around 50°. I decided to buy a heavier jacket because I was starting to suffer with the cold and I couldn't imagine wearing my summer clothes.

The day after, the temperature started to go up (Murphy's Law). Not counting that the variation in the temperature within the same day here is absurd. For example, yesterday it was 18°C (64°F) early in the morning and it reached 43°C (109°F) later in the afternoon/evening - the sun sets at 8:30. According to Juan, that temperature is equivalent to being inside an oven with a hair drier blowing hot wind right on your face - it's windy here because of the proximity with the ocean. I hadn't been this hot since my childhood in the summer in Rio. It's really unpleasant. Some companies closed earlier and there were train delays because of the excessive heat. We decided to go to the beach to enjoy the sunny day but we almost regretted it when we were on the way there because it was too hot. The beach was crowded and although the water was ice cold there were a lot of people swimming in the ocean.

But it was worth it in the end. The sunset was beautiful.

Visita ao zoológico - Visit to the zoo

I'm enjoying everything here, but so far the most unique place I've seen was the Ballarat Wildlife Park. I think it's because I saw things which I wouldn't have seen but in Australia, especially the kangaroos, the koala bear, the Tasmanian devil and the wombats (a kind of big fat rat which two huge, funny front teeth - I'd never heard of that animal before). I'm not much of animal person, but the wildlife here drew my attention, I think because of their importance to the Australian culture - especially the kangaroo, the main icon of the country.

Amei o koala.

I loved the koala. It looks like a teddy bear and it's so soft. Its eyes are minuscule. Because it's bred in captivity, this one is not wild and we were allowed to touch it, but not hold it. The wild ones can be dangerous, though. He never stopped chewing those leaves and the guy said all they do is eat and sleep.

But nothing enchanted me more than the kangaroos. They were spread around the park and we saw one right at the entrance, which intrigued me because I thought they would be caged. There's a myth that kangaroos are dangerous, but, in general, they're docile and they don't attack humans unless they're provoked. These were extremely friendly and they would mingle with the people, kind of like park hosts! I thought they were the best! They were all over the place and we could even feed them. We took dozens of pictures and I confess I didn't want to leave the place.

Esse aqui tava interagindo com o wombat.

Here is one interacting with a wombat.

I got a video of one pushing a guy into a river, but I'm glad this one wasn't at the park!
