Visita ao zoológico - Visit to the zoo

Estou amando tudo por aqui, mas até agora o lugar mais singular que eu vi foi o zoológico Ballarat. Lá vi coisas que só veria aqui na Austrália, sobretudo os cangurus e os animais típicos daqui, como o koala, o demônio da Tasmânia e os 'wombat' (tipo um rato bem grande e gordo, com dois dentes grandes e engraçados na frente, cuja tradução para o português é 'wombat' ou 'vombate' - nunca tinha ouvido falar!) Eu não sou muito fã de animais, mas esses me chamaram a atenção, acho que por causa da sua importância cultural - principalmente o canguru, o maior ícone do país.

I'm enjoying everything here, but so far the most unique place I've seen was the Ballarat Wildlife Park. I think it's because I saw things which I wouldn't have seen but in Australia, especially the kangaroos, the koala bear, the Tasmanian devil and the wombats (a kind of big fat rat which two huge, funny front teeth - I'd never heard of that animal before). I'm not much of animal person, but the wildlife here drew my attention, I think because of their importance to the Australian culture - especially the kangaroo, the main icon of the country.

Amei o koala. Parece um ursinho de pelúcia e o pelo dele é tão fofo. O olhinho dele é minúsculo. Por ser criado em cativeiro, esse não é feroz e podemos tocar nele, mas não pegar no colo. Mas os selvagens podem ser perigosos. Ele não parou de mastigar essas folhas nem por um segundo e o rapaz falou que eles só comem e dormem.

I loved the koala. It looks like a teddy bear and it's so soft. Its eyes are minuscule. Because it's bred in captivity, this one is not wild and we were allowed to touch it, but not hold it. The wild ones can be dangerous, though. He never stopped chewing those leaves and the guy said all they do is eat and sleep.

 

Mas nada me encantou mais do que os cangurus. Eles estavam soltos pelo parque e vimos um logo na chegada, o que me intrigou, pois pensei que eles ficavam enjaulados. Existe um mito de que cangurus são ferozes, mas, em geral, são dóceis e não atacam a menos que sejam provocados. Esses eram extremamente dóceis e ficavam no meio das pessoas até interagindo, uma espécie de anfitriões do parque! Achei o máximo! Tinham dezenas deles espalhados e podemos até alimentá-los. Tiramos muitas fotos e confesso que eu não queria mais sair de lá!

But nothing enchanted me more than the kangaroos. They were spread around the park and we saw one right at the entrance, which intrigued me because I thought they would be caged. There's a myth that kangaroos are dangerous, but, in general, they're docile and they don't attack humans unless they're provoked. These were extremely friendly and they would mingle with the people, kind of like park hosts! I thought they were the best! They were all over the place and we could even feed them. We took dozens of pictures and I confess I didn't want to leave the place.

Australia - The Grampians

Outro lugar que fomos ver foi o Parque Nacional Grampians. É um parque muito lindo cheio de trilhas e vistas espetaculares composto de formações de rocha sedimentar (arenito), responsável por formas inusitadas, como essa que parece a boca de um jacaré. Me deu um frio na espinha ver o Juan lá! Quase não consegui bater a foto. Não precisa dizer que essa parte do passeio eu pulei! Não sou aventureira!

Another place we went was the Grampians. It's a national park full of sandstone rock formations, responsible for unique shapes, such as this one that looks like an alligator mouth. It gave me the chills to see Juan there. I could barely shoot the picture. Needless to say, I skipped that part of the show. I'm not the risk-taker, adventurous type!

Australia - Great Ocean Road

Um das costas mais majestosas que já vi, a Great Ocean Road é uma rodovia de 234 km que segue uma parte da costa sudeste da Austrália. As formações rochosas de calcário são fruto da erosão da água do mar. Ao longo da estrada, você pode parar e ter vistas estonteantemente lindas de vários lugares. Indescritível! As fotos não conseguem capturar a beleza do lugar. O ponto turístico é tombado pelo Patrimônio Nacional.

One of the most majestic views I've ever had, the Great Ocean Road is a 243 kilometre (151 mi) stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia. The limestock formation derives from seawater erosion. Along the road you can stop at several lookouts and have stunning views of the ocean. Indescribable! The photos can by no means capture the beauty of the place. The sight is an Australian National Heritage.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

O único problema é que estava muito frio! 13 graus e com vento muito forte, que nos impedia de passar muito tempo em cada ponto. Eu vim pra Austrália no verão e precisei de roupas de inverno! Aqui eu estava com 3 blusas e ainda precisei comprar uma echarpe senão não teria aguentado. Até os australianos estavam reclamando do frio e essa frente fria deu até no jornal. Garanto que não fui eu que trouxe esse pé frio!!
Olha minha cara de desespero! Talvez por isso que as praias brasileiras são tão famosas. Tem sol!

The only problem was that it was too cold for me. 55 degrees and with very strong winds, which kept us from spending a lot of time in each lookout. I came to Australia in the summer and needed winter clothes! I was wearing 3 layers of clothes and even needed to buy myself a scarf or else I wouldn't have put up with it. Even Australians were complaining and the cold front was even in the news. I swear I didn't bring that! Look at me desperate! Maybe that's why Brazilian beaches are so celebrated. There's sun in them! 

Alugamos um carro para ir ver esse ponto turístico. O Juan dirigindo do lado direito do carro e na faixa da  esquerda foi muito legal de ver!

We rented a car to go see this tourist spot. And Juan driving on the right seat and on the left lane was a cool thing to see!

Melbourne - linda cidade - a beautiful city

Melbourne é a segunda maior cidade da Austrália. Fundada em 1835, em menos de 200 anos cresceu e se tornou hoje a melhor cidade do mundo para se viver, segundo o ranking de melhores cidades da revista The Economist. Não é à toa. A cidade é linda, muito limpa e organizada, o sistema de transporte público é perfeito, o povo é muito educado e simpático, entre outros índices mais técnicos como educação e baixíssima taxa de criminalidade. Eu e o Juan andamos pela cidade e tiramos alguma fotos.

Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia. Founded in 1835, in less than 200 years it has become the best city in the world to live, according to The Economist. No wonder. The city is beautiful, very clean and organized, the public transport system is perfect, the people are nice and polite, not counting with other more technical rates, such as education and low crime rate. I walked around the town with Juan and here are some shots we took.

O que mais chama a atenção aqui é a arquitetura inusitada dos prédios.

What draws my attention the most is the unique architecture of the buildings.

 

 

 

 

Amei a biblioteca pública, principalmente a parte interna.

I particularly loved the public library, especially inside.

A Federation Square é uma praça bem no coração da cidade, onde há muitas atrações, entre elas o Museu da Imagem, que conta a história do cinema e das imagens em movimento como um todo, como os vídeos games, por exemplo. Cheio de coisas interessantes para ver e fazer.

The Federation Square is a plaza right in the heart of the town where there are a lot of interesting things to see, such as the ACMI - the Australian Center for the Moving Image - which tells the history of cinema and digital images as a whole, such as video games and stuff. It's full of interesting things to see and do.

Australia - Melbourne 2014 - Chegada

Com o Juan na Austrália no Ciências Sem Fronteiras por 14 meses, não resisti vir visitá-lo. Infelizmente por compromissos profissionais o Joaquim não pôde vir comigo.

With Juan in Australia in the government program Science Without Frontiers for 14 months, I couldn't resist coming to see him. Unfortunately, for professional reasons, Joaquim couldn't come with me.


A viagem é super longa. Da hora que saí de Fortaleza em 29/12 até a hora que cheguei em Melbourne em 31/12 foram quase 48 horas. Mas o vôo pela Etihad (empresa dos Emirados Árabes) foi ótimo: muito confortável (maior espaço do que o normal) e serviço impecável, com ótima comida e muito bem servido. Cada passageiro ganha uma necessaire com máscara, protetor auricular, um par de meias e escova e pasta de dente. Era tão fofa que pensei que outro passageiro tinha esquecido na poltrona! E o fone é de excelente qualidade (mas tem que devolver).

It is a long trip. From the time I left Fortaleza on Dec 29 until the time I arrived in Melbourne on Dec 31 it took almost 48 hours. But the flight with Arabic Etihad was great - very comfortable (more leg space than usual) and impeccable service, with plenty of excellent food. Each passenger gets a case with a sleep mask, ear plugs, a pair of socks, a toothbush and a toothpaste. The case was so cute I thought a previous passenger had left it there. And the earphones are of excelent quality (but they recollect it).

Cheguei inteira, embora embaralhada por causa do fuso horário de 14 hs de diferença. Rever o Juan depois de 3 meses longe foi uma grande emoção. Achei ele mais lindo do que nunca!

I was just fine when I arrived, even though I was kind of messed up because of jetlag. I was overcome with emotion at seeing Juan again after 3 months. I thought he was better looking than ever!!

Depois disso ainda achei energia pra ir ver os fogos do Reveillon. Lindo!

After that I still found energy to go see the New Year's Eve fireworks display. Beautiful!

Como estava tarde, dormi no apto do Juan. Literalmente caí no sono.

As it was late, I slept in Juan's apartment. I literally fell asleep.

No dia seguinte viemos pro flat que alugamos. É ótimo, bem localizado e tem tudo. Daí dá pra fazer as refeições aqui mesmo. E o Juan é quem vai fazer a comida!

On the next day we came to the place I rented for the month. It's real nice, in a great location and it's got everything we need. So, we'll be making our meals here. Juan will do the cooking!!

Descansamos o resto do dia, mesmo porque como era feriado (1 de janeiro) estava tudo fechado.

We got rest the rest of the day. Everything was closed anyway because of the Jan 1 holiday.
