O tempo - The Weather

Believe it or not, after three beautiful days with the temperature in the 70's, today it dropped to 46 degrees. It's unbelievable! Here I go again put on my winter clothes!

Acredite se quiser, após três lindos dias ensolarados na média de 20 graus C, hoje a temperatura caiu para 8 graus. É inacreditável. Lá estou eu toda empacotada de novo!

COMPREI UMA BICICLETA!! Finalmente agora tenho um pouco mais de mobilidade e como o tempo está melhorando, posso fazer algumas coisas de bike, principalmente no fim de semana, pois o ônibus demora muito para passar. Um dos lugares para onde eu planejava ir de bike era para a minha sessão de acupuntura (vou escrever só sobre isso depois), que fica no centro e tenho que pegar três onibus para chegar até lá. Não é tão longe, mas as rotas dos ônibus são curtas. Outra opção é ir a pé, mas demora muito e por causa do frio, que agora, se Deus quiser, não é mais problema, eu evitava. Bem, meu plano era ir para a acupuntura de bike. E fui. Só que não percebi, porque eu sempre ia de ônibus, que o centro da cidade em relação à minha casa aqui é numa região bem baixa, ou seja, na ida, eu desço uma ladeira e na volta, subo. Na ida, mal precisei pedalar, mas quem disse que na volta meus quadríceps aguentaram subir aquela ladeira? O resultado foi que tive que subir a ladeira com a bike!! Eu que não queria andar, agora tinha uma bike para carregar! E a vergonha? As pessoas passavam por mim e deviam estar pensando quem era aquela doida. Eu poderia ter ido de ônibus e colocado a bike no rack, mas são três ônibus, tá lembrado? Das duas maneiras, teria que fazer muita força. Moral da história: tô morrendo de saudades do meu carro!!!!

Estórias engraçadas - Minhas trapalhadas 3

Hoje tive que ir na bilbioteca pegar uns livros. Eu tenho que pegar dois ônibus, tanto na ida quanto na volta. Na ida, eu pego o 82 aqui na porta, desço no campus, que é enorme, e pego o 81, que para quase na porta da Africana. Na volta, eu pego o 81, desço num ponto e pego o 82. Essa é a minha rotina. Só que hoje eu estava tão distraída que quando me toquei eu estava fora da rota: eu tinha esquecido de trocar de ônibus e fui até o fim da linha do 81. Como o ônibus não ia sair de novo logo, decidi voltar a pé para pegar o 82. Andei uns três quarteirões. Perguntei onde era o ponto mais perto, mas ou eu entendi errado ou me informaram errado. Quando o ônibus 82 passou, não parou onde eu estava (aqui não precisa dar com a mão - se tiver gente, o ônibus para). Ainda bem que o tempo hoje está lindo, uns 20 graus, mas esperar ônibus NÃO É MEU ESPORTE FAVORITO! Procurei o local certo do ponto e tive que esperar mais quinze minutos. Moral da história: tô morrendo de saudades do meu carro!!!!

Uma das minhas companheiras de apartamento, Sandy, da Áustria, foi embora hoje. Ontem à noite tivemos uma "pizzada" para celebrar a despedida. Sandy é muito legal, adorei conhecê-la. Na foto, as quatro ocupantes do apartamento. Da esquerda para a direita: Sandy (Áustria), Nicky (Alemanha), eu (Brasil - é mesmo?) e Shan (China/Ohio). Tchau, Sandy!! Sentiremos sua falta!

Primeiro dia de sol - First sunny day

Eu estava tão feliz porque hoje o dia acordou ensolarado e - acredite - 27 graus. Tive que sair hoje para um almoço com um professor da Africana e tinha um livro para pegar na biblioteca e fiquei feliz porque o dia estava lindo (quando está frio, eu tento não sair). Ouvi na TV que a primavera finalmente tinha chegado. Acabei de chegar em casa e de repente o tempo fechou e começou a chover. Tá anunciando no canal da TV da meteorologia que vai ter uma tempestade com raios e trovões hoje e possivelmente chuva de granizo do tamanho de uma bola de golfe!!!!! Buáááa!!! Por falar nisso, aqui tem um canal só para falar do clima. Imagina esse canal em Fortaleza, só precisa gravar dois programas - um para quando vai chover e outro para quando vai ser sol!

I was so happy because the weather was so sunny when I woke up and - believe it or not - it was 71 degrees. I had to go out because I had a lunch with a professor from Africana and I also had a book to check out so I was happy because the day was beautiful (when it's cold I try to stay home). I heard on the weather channel that spring had finally arrived (Spring has sprung!) Well, I just got home and all of a sudden the weather changed and it started raining. They're announcing in the weather channel that there is supposed to be a thunderstorm tonight with possible golf-ball hail!!!! I wanna cry! Speaking of that, there is a TV channel here just to talk about the weather. Can you imagine this channel in Fortaleza? They only have to make two programs - one for when it's raining and for when it's not!

Minha viagem à Nova York - My trip to New York

Ithaca is only five hours away from New York City by bus so I figured it was something I couldn't miss. I wasn't wrong. New York City is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been to. Rio is still first place because of the natural beauty of the mountains and the beaches and the buildings altogether. But NYC is a dream if you like cities. It's everything I thought it would be and then some.

Ithaca fica só a 5 horas de Nova York de ônibus então achei que eu não poderia deixar de ir até lá. Eu não estava errada. NY é uma das cidades mais bonitas que eu já vi. O Rio ainda ganha por causa da beleza natural das montanhas e das praias em conjunto com os prédios. Mas NY é um sonho se você gosta de cidades grandes. E tudo o que eu pensei e mais um pouquinho.

I was excited right from the entrance of the city, so much so that I took pictures of the road signs - how pathetic is that?

Eu já fiquei estusiasmada na entrada da cidade, tanto que tirei foto até das placas - que coisa ridícula, né!

I also shot this little video. My voice was too low but I was saying that I'm scared to death of NY. Not because of muggers, violence, none of that. I'm scared to death of not wanting to leave there. That would be a problem. I confess I was a little sad on the day I had to go home.

Fiz também esse filme. A voz tava baixa, mas eu falo que morro de medo de NY. Não por causa de roubos, assaltos, nada disso. Mas eu morro de medo de não querer mais sair de lá!! Isso seria um problema. Confesso que senti uma pequena tristeza na hora de ir embora.

As good as NY can be, the best part of my trip was being with my old friend Kathy. We met in 1982 in Kent, Ohio, when I was an exchange student. We decided to meet in NY and I thought it was a great idea. Kathy looks the same - just great - and we are still great friends: A good friend is a forever friend, right, Kathy? My definition of friend is 'someone with whom you don't have to worry about what you're going to say next'. Kathy and I just talk all the time!! We were there for 4 days and never stopped talking. I love you, Kathy!

NY pode ser tudo de bom, mas a melhor parte da minha viagem foi estar com a minha grande amiga de velhos tempos, Kathy. Nós nos conhecemos em 1982 em Kent, quando fui estudante de intercâmbio. Decidimos nos encontrar em NY e achei uma ótima ideia. A Kathy não mudou nada, está ótima e ainda somos ótimas amigas: um amigo é um amigo para sempre, né, Kathy? Minha definição de amigo é 'alguém com quem você não precisa se preocupar com a próxima coisa que vai dizer'. Eu e a Kathy não paramos de falar! Passamos 4 dias lá e conversamos todo o tempo. Amo você, Kathy!

Of the places I got to see, my favorite was Times Square. It is so colorful with all those digital billboards. It is medicine for depression! You can never be bored at Times Square. Broadway Street goes through Times Square, so a lot of the Broadway shows are right there, like the one we saw (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert). It's one of the most exciting places I've ever seen in my whole life.

Dos lugares que eu vi, Times Square foi o meu favorito. É tão colorido e é cheio de outdoors digitais. É remédio para depressão! Não dá pra ficar entediado na Times Square. A Broadway, que é uma rua, passa pela Times Square, então muitos dos teatros onde são os famosos shows são na Times Square, como o que nós assistimos (Priscilla, Rainha do Deserto). Esse é um dos lugares mais interessantes que eu já vi na vida.

Essa é a cabine do tkts, onde se compram tickets para os showsda Broadway com descontos. Ficamos mais de uma hora na fila, embaixo de chuva, mas foi ótimo!

Another wonderful place from where you can see a beautiful view of NY is the Rockfeller Center. The building has 76 floors and there is an observatory on the top, called Top of the Rock. The Empire State Building is taller and more famous, but it is also more crowded - the line to enter was more than an hour-long wait and it was outdoors - brrrrrr. The Top of the Rock was less crowded and the line was indors. Another advantage of the Top of the Rock is that from there you can see the Empire State Building. I just loved the view from there.

Outro lugar maravilhoso de onde dá pra ter uma vista linda de NY é o Rockfeller Center. O prédio tem 76 andares e tem um observatório no topo, chamado Top of the Rock. O Empire State Building é mais alto e mais famoso, mas também é mais cheio - a fila para entrar era mais de uma hora ao ar livre. O Top of the Rock estava menos cheio e a fila era do lado de dentro. Outra vantagem do Top of the Rock é que de lá dá pra ver o Empire State Building. Amei a vista de lá.

A Estátua da Liberdade não dá pra perder, apesar da enorme fila de 3 horas para entrar no barco. Mas valeu a pena. E a vista de NY que se tem de lá é maravilhosa.

You can't miss the Statue of Liberty, in spite of the three-hour wait in line just to get on the boat. But it was worth every minute of it. And the view of the NY Skyline you have from there is wonderful.

Another great place we went to was the Seaport. It's an old deck where there are now restaurants and shops. It was a nice place!

Outro lugar lindo que fomos foi o Seaport. É um pequeno e antigo porto com lojas e restaurantes. Um lugar muito agradável!

We also took this tour bus from where we were able to see most of the city. You hop on and off as many times as you want for 48 hours. Great deal. One of the buses had a Brazil ad on the back and Kathy took a picture of me - Brazil is calling you! Not yet, please!

Nós também pagamos um ônibus de turismo de onde pudemos ver quase a cidade toda. Você entra e sai quantas vezes quiser por 48 horas. Ótimo negócio. Um dos ônibus tinha um anúncio do Brasil e a Kathy bateu uma foto minha - o Brasil está lhe chamando! Agora não, por favor!

Central Park was a little disappointing - I'm definitely not a park person. It was too cold and I got bored after 5 minutes. I think you can tell by my face in the picture.

Central Park foi um pouco decepcionante - definitivamente não sou uma pessoa que gosta de parques. Estava muito frio e fiquei entediada depois de uns 5 minutos. Dá pra ver pela minha cara na foto.

Em suma, bati muitas outras fotos, mas dá muito trabalho para colocar aqui. Depois eu mostro o resto! O fato é que A-M-E-I NY e pretendo voltar aqui com o Joaquim e o Juan, pelo menos, e muito em breve!

Apresentação na aula da Profa. Davies - Presentation in Prof. Davies's class

Today was a great day. I went to give a presentation at Prof. Carol Boyce Davies's class about the diaspora in Brazil. The name of my presentation was "The Colors of Brasil" and I focused on the situation of Afro-brazilians today. I got to meet her students and they had a lot of questions to ask about Brazil, some of which I could not answer, for example, when they asked about the number of Afro-Brazilians who were actually active in the Black Movement. I said it was probably a relatively small number. I did not know the answer whey they asked why. They were also impressed at our income distribution.
I took some pictures and what impressed me the most was the colors of these pictures. They go with the name of the presentation - "The Colors of Brazil".

Prof. Davies is from Trinidad. She has been to Brazil and speaks Portuguese. Here is a link to her biography.
